Advances in the development of predictive tools for quantifying wave attenuation by coastal ecosystems
报告人:
Dr. María Maza,西班牙坎塔布里亚大学助理教授
报告人简介:
María Maza is an Assistant Professor at the University of Cantabria (UC) and a researcher at the Institute of Environmental Hydraulics of Cantabria (IHCantabria) where she leads the Nature-Based Solutions for Coastal Defense team. María is a Civil Engineer (2010), she obtained her master's degree in Port and Coastal Engineering in 2012 and her doctorate in 2015 from the University of Cantabria, for which she received the Extraordinary Doctorate Award from the UC. Later, she did a post-doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department (CEE). Her research focuses on unraveling the fundamentals and modeling the flow-ecosystem interaction, with the aim of obtaining new tools from basic science and thus promoting the use of so-called Nature-Based Solutions, as coastal protection measures. Based on field and laboratory observations, and on numerical modeling, her work combines complex hydrodynamics with the biophysics of coastal ecosystems, developing new formulations and tools that allow quantifying the coastal protection service provided by these new solutions.
报告二:
Vegetation dynamics in tidal salt marshes
报告人:
Alvise Finotello,意大利帕多瓦大学助理教授
报告人简介:
Alvise Finotello is Assistant Professor at the Department of Geosciences, University of Padova. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil Hydraulic Engineering in 2010 and 2013, respectively, and a Ph.D. degree in Earth Sciences (cum laude) in 2017 from the University of Padova. In 2015 and 2016, he has been a visiting scientist at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, University of Minnesota. Between 2017 and 2021, he held a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Dept. of Geosciences - University of Padova (2017-2018), at the Center for Lagoon Hydrodynamics and Morphodynamics (CIMoLa) - University of Padova (2019), and at the Dept. of Environmental Sciences, Informatics, and Statistics - Ca' Foscari University of Venice (2020-2021).
Combining field surveys, remote sensing analyses, numerical modeling, and physical laboratory experiments, Alvise investigates the morphodynamic evolution of tidal channels and tidal channel networks in tidally-influenced estuarine and fluvio-deltaic environments, as well as the intertwined ecogeomorphological feedbacks between tidal currents, sea-level changes, wind waves, and vegetation dynamics and their effects on the long term evolution of tidal salt-marshes.
In addition, he is also interested in understanding the ecomorphodynamic evolution of meandering rivers, a relevant topic with global implications for stream and wetland restoration, land management, infrastructure design, oil exploration and production, carbon sequestration, flood-risk mitigation, and planetary paleoenvironmental reconstruction.
